Fangirl: The Next Generation
Sep. 28th, 2006 11:04 pmI'm exhausted so this may not even be coherent. I had anime club tonight at the library. Me in a room with 16 unruly teenagers. It's the best birth control EVER. Not that I don't love them, but I don't see how my parents did this 24/7.
Anyway, my niece, Hillary, was there as usual. When Hillary was born, everyone commented on how much she looked like me. To this day, people always mistake her for my daughter. About two years ago, I began noticing the subtle signs of fangirlism.
All kids go through a stage where they are obsessed with certain things. Her brother went through Peter Pan, Dick Tracy, Ghostbusters, Batman, etc., but about the time he turned ten, he became more interested in sports and didn't want to watch Red Dwarf with me anymore.
I had a sneaking suspicion that Hillary was a closet fangirl. It was just little things. She would mention specific websites that I knew were fandom related. She was so faithful to her favorite shows (Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh) that she would try to pimp them to me. I think she was testing to waters to see how I would react. Finally, she came out of the fangirl closet and showed me her fan art. Of course, I was overjoyed. She reminds me so much of myself at 14.
Tonight, I got to be the cool "saves the day" aunt. She dressed up live Envy from FullMetal Alchemist and decided to recreate Envy's tattoo. Her mother knew nothing about this addition to her costume. Unfortunately, Hillary used indelible ink. It took almost a tub of alcohol wipes to get it off her. She still has a red stain on her leg, but it's not that obvious. It's now our fangirl secret.
