I starting thinking last night about our last real hurricane, Hurricane Alicia. Alicia hit at the end of August, 1983, a few weeks before my 16th birthday. I decided to take a look at my journal during that time to see how a 15 year old felt about a pending category 3 hurricane. I am not going to quote entries verbatim, but here's the gist:

Talked to Tim and Kelly on the phone. Insert random teenage angst involved stupid confirmist Republicans at school (They're all LEMMINGS!). Pending hurricane. DARK SHADOWS. Darks Shadows memorabilia. Dark Shadows fanzine. Dark Shadows bootleg videotapes. Dark Shadows BNF wants me help with fanzine. SQUEEEEEEE!!!! Dark Shadows. Worked on one of my DS stories. Here comes the hurricane. Talked to Tim and Kelly on the phone. We hate everyone and we want to overthrow the government. And we might go to San Jacinto Mall as soon as the storm is over to look for the new Dead Kennedys record. Worked on the screenplay I'm writing. Hurricane. 80 mile an hour winds. No lights. 2 days with a/c. We leave for Carthage, TX. I packed 3 suitcases full of books and cassettes. DOCTOR WHO is on TV there! DOCTOR WHO. SARAH JANE SMITH. TOM BAKER. SQUEEEEEEE!!!! Angst. DOCTOR WHO! Found an old resale shop and bought a cool blue men's suit jacket. I wonder if the person who used to wear jacket this is dead. I'm so going to put all my DK, Sex Pistols, and other buttons on this jacket. We go home just in time for the lights to come back on and there's a letter waiting for me about DARK SHADOWS!
